Property in Phalaborwa situated in the Limpopo province of South Africa
The copper mining town of Phalaborwa is only 3km from the Kruger National Park of South Africa and hosts some of the widest open mines in the world. Property in Phalaborwa is attractive because of the tourist attractions in the area and also because of the year long warm weather. The name Phalaborwa means ‘better than the south', and the residents celebrate a festival in late August each year in honour of this northern patriotism.
Phalaborwa is one of the most unique towns in South Africa and a treasure trove of natural and mineral wealth. As the tourism capital of Limpopo Province, its central location makes it the ideal base from where to explore the natural beauty of Mpumalanga with the Kruger National Park situated less than 2km away.
Phalaborwa is an oasis within Big Five country surrounded by the Kruger National Park, extensive game reserves, specialised breeding ranches and sanctuaries for endangered species. It is the land of the White Lion, King Cheetah and African wild dog. Phalaborwa is the central gate and airport to the Kruger National Park and Lowveld of South Africa and has one of the top golf courses in the country where the fairways border the fence of the Kruger national Park.
Phalaborwa was established in 1958 around the mining industry. Around 2,000 million years ago a gigantic volcanic eruption took place in the area. A volcanic pipe some 10 km in diameter resulted, richly loaded with minerals and metals such as phosphate, copper, zirconium, vermiculite, iron, mica and gold. The indigenous Nguni tribes, who many centuries ago were the first to identify and exploit these mineral wealth's gave “Phalaborwa” it's name. Today Phalaborwa supports a vast mining industry, including one of the world's largest open-cast mines supplying vital minerals to the country. The mining of phosphates, copper, vermiculite and iron forms the economic base of the town. The ore from which these minerals are extracted, is concentrated in a huge and very rich pipe.
